Though there’s really no such thing as a “slow” day in this industry, summer is a perfect time to catch up on some lighter reading and fuel our creativity. Over half of our team has found themselves on “BookTok,” and we’re constantly passing our favorite reads and recommendations around the office. Here’s a look at what PRESS is reading:

Verity by Colleen Hoover
A fast-paced read centered around two authors, Verity is keeping me on my toes, ready and eager to turn the page. The book starts with a struggling author in search of a book deal but when she gets it, the next two weeks of her life turn into a roller coaster. Verity is thrilling, engaging and entertaining and I would recommend it for all readers. – Ashley

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson
As someone who always gravitates toward thrillers and mysteries, I’ve been loving The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. So far, the story follows a prominent writer and a charismatic investigator with a troubled past in Sweden as they team up to not only get to the bottom of a murder but uncover a major financial scandal in the process. The fact that much of the story is told from a journalist’s perspective makes it even more interesting. I’m about halfway through and know it’s building up to a reveal that’s sure to throw me for a loop! – Annie

Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid
While I’m typically one to go for a cheesy romance or coming-of-age novel (don’t judge), I switched it up when I decided to read Such a Fun Age. This book takes a real, deep look at society, relationships and the changes we go through as we get older. Emira, the narrator, sets the tone throughout the novel with her calm, yet aimless outlook on life as a mid-twenty something. The story follows Emira and her boss, Alix, as their paths intertwine in more ways than one, chronicling how the two women navigate what it means to make the right decision and struggle to find their place in the world. – Sarah

Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Malibu Rising is easily one of the most trending books on social media right now, and I’m lucky to have such an awesome coworker (thanks, Ashley) to lend it to me! Who doesn’t love a story packed full of California surfers, fame, love and—of course—drama? Nina, the main character, part-time model and wife of a famous tennis player, brings the reader along into her lavish lifestyle in Malibu, California. Although it may seem like a perfect world, Nina is filled with secrets. This book is an empowering read for young women, and I can see why it’s hit the best seller list. I know what I’ll be reading by the pool this weekend! – Caroline

The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave
I recently finished reading The Last Thing He Told Me. I’d seen it mentioned just about everywhere, including Reese’s Book Club, before I was finally influenced. The main character is newlywed Hannah Hall, who searches for the truth about her husband’s disappearance while caring for and navigating a tenuous relationship with his teenage daughter. What I appreciated most about the novel was the originality, distinctive voice and character development. The big question: Would I recommend it? Yes and no. Yes, but I would not highly recommend it. Instead, I would steer mystery readers towards The Guest List by Lucy Foley. – Erin

As much as we love brushing up on industry trends or the day’s news, escaping with a good fictional story is always a refreshing change of pace and a great way to get inspired as writers! One thing’s for sure—the PRESS team has you covered for book recs.
